Canadian soliders combating the Taliban have encountered a familiar but very formidable enemy – dense forests of marijuana 10 feet tall. Taliban fighters have been using the marijuana forests as cover because the plants have a high rate of heat absorbtion making the Taliban invisible to thermal images. The Canadians have responded by camoflaging their tanks with large marijuana leaves and have tried to burn down the forests of weed. This strategy proved ineffective because the marijuana plants were full of water while even successful burnings had hazy consequences on other Canadian soldiers downwind. The General in charge decided this “was probably not the right course of action.”
One soldier told him later: “Sir, three years ago before I joined the army, I never thought I’d say ‘That damn marijuana’.”
